US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is asking Congress for a $1.2 billion bailout. The agency claims it will run out of money by the end of the summer without aid due to a decline in immigration caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

+10% is viel zu wenig.

“We previously anticipated that the furlough would begin on July 20, but we have received additional revenue and have identified cost savings to extend the potential furlough date to Aug. 3 in the event Congress does not provide emergency funding,” a USCIS spokeswoman said Friday afternoon in an email to Federal News Network. “We continue to work with Congress to provide the necessary funding to avert this unfortunate consequence.”

Some 13,400 USCIS employees face administrative furloughs, the agency said.

  • The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a stopgap bill that expands the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) premium processing program in an attempt to prevent the agency from furloughing 70% of its workforce on August 30.
  • Chances of the bill passing through the full Congress are currently unknown, so furloughs on August 30 and a resulting USCIS processing slowdown remain a possibility.
